Jan Havránek
Policy Advisor, Policy Planning Unit of the Office of the Secretary General, NATO

Jan Havránek is the Policy Adviser at the Policy Planning Unit of the Office of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. He previously served as the Defense Counselor at the Czech delegation to NATO HQ in Brussels (2014 – 2017), the Assistant First Deputy Minister and Defense Policy Director of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic (2013 – 2014), and the deputy defense policy director and foreign policy advisor to the Czech Minister of Defense (2010 – 2013). 

Jan has been an active member of the transatlantic community. In 2017, he co-designed a NATO Advance Research Workshop focusing on resilience training and education. He served as a member of SACEUR Admiral Stavridis' Next Generation Advisory Panel (2012 - 2013). In 2013, Jan Havránek was named to the Diplomatic Courier’s annual list of the “Top 99 Under 33 Foreign Policy Leaders.” He also advised on the Defense Austerity V4 Project by GLOBSEC as a national expert (2012 – 2013), and served as the adjunct fellow at the Washington-based Center for European Policy Analysis (2013 – 2014). His other earlier engagements included research and executive work for the Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis, Prague Security Studies Institute and Association for International Affairs. 

Jan holds degrees from Charles University in Prague and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (MALD 2009).

Jan is married and has two sons. He enjoys singing and painting.
